Today is a joyous day for Catholics around the world as we welcome Pope Leo XIV. In a moving ceremony held in St. Peter’s Square, the faithful watched with hearts full of hope as Cardinal Robert Prevost was introduced as His Holiness Pope Leo XIV. He is the newly elected leader of the Roman Catholic Church and also the first Augustinian Pope in Church history. 

The spirit of celebration is present in churches, homes, and places of faith like The Leo House. With open hearts and prayerful hope, we embrace this new chapter in the Church’s history. It is an especially meaningful celebration for The Leo House—a Catholic guesthouse named after Pope Leo XIII. 

Born in Chicago, Pope Leo XIV (formerly Cardinal Robert Prevost) entered the Order of St. Augustine, taking his first vows in 1978. After completing undergraduate studies at Villanova University, he then earned a Master of Divinity from the Catholic Theological Union in 1982. This was the same year he was ordained a priest. Committed to both spiritual and intellectual formation, he pursued advanced studies in Rome, earning licentiate and doctorate degrees in canon law from the Pontifical College of St. Thomas Aquinas.

His rise to the papacy comes just two years after he was named Cardinal Designate by the late Pope Francis and officially installed in September 2023. Known for his humility, warmth, and commitment to dialogue, Pope Leo XIV’s leadership is expected to blend Augustinian spirituality with a clear vision for the Church’s future. His election signals a renewal rooted in wisdom, compassion, and unity.

When electing a new pope, he chooses a new name to signify a spiritual mission and to honor a legacy he wishes to continue or emulate. Dating back to the 6th century, this tradition reflects the profound transformation that takes place when a man becomes the spiritual leader of over a billion Catholics. By choosing the name Pope Leo XIV, His Holiness aligns himself with a lineage of known for strength, clarity, theological impact, and a commitment to social issues.

Pope Leo XIV will be the 14th pope who selected this name. Pope Leo I, also known as St. Leo the Great, held papacy from 440-461. He was declared a Doctor of the Church and is remembered for defending the Church’s doctrine. He was famous for unifying Christians during turbulent times and for dissuading Attila the Hun from attacking Rome.

With a doctorate in canon law, perhaps the new Pope will clarify the teachings on central issues. Pope Leo XIII, the namesake of The Leo House, was a visionary leader of the Catholic church from 1878 to 1903. His modern Catholic social teaching movement, Rerum Novarum, addresses the rights of workers and the responsibilities of capital. By adopting the name “Leo,” Pope Leo XIV pays tribute to a tradition of intellectual courage, moral clarity, and pastoral leadership—signaling that his papacy, too, may be one of thoughtful strength and spiritual renewal. 

As we celebrate this new beginning, we bid farewell to His Holiness, Pope Francis. His papacy touched millions with its message of love, simplicity, and inclusion. As the first Jesuit and first pope from the Americas, Pope Francis—born Jorge Mario Bergoglio—ushered in a new era for the Church. Pope Francis will be known for his focus on mercy, advocacy for the poor, interfaith dialogue, and environmental responsibility. His landmark encyclicals, including Laudato Si’ and Fratelli Tutti, will remain guiding lights for generations to come.

We will remember him as a compassionate shepherd who embraced the poor, advocated for peace, and modeled humility. Today, we lift prayers for the eternal rest of his soul and for the loved ones he leaves behind. Today, we extend heartfelt prayers to his family . We offer condolences to the many people who were personally and spiritually touched by his leadership, compassion, and unwavering faith.

Heavenly Father,
We give thanks for the life and service of Pope Francis. May his soul rest in Your eternal peace. May his memory inspire acts of love and mercy in us all.
We pray also for Pope Leo XIV. Grant him wisdom, strength, and humility as he guides Your Church forward. May the Holy Spirit illuminate his path and surround him with faithful counsel.

May his bring forth unity, healing, and a renewed spirit of love.
Watch over him, O Lord, and bless the Church with peace and courage for the journey ahead. Unite us in prayer as one body in Christ. May our Church be a beacon of hope under new leadership. Amen.
